Srdečně zveme na přednášku prof. Michaela Beckermana s názvem Sunshine and Shadow: Is the American University in 2023 a Good Model?

Abstrakt: The American university today is a diverse, thriving series of communities. With exciting advances in the sciences, new directions in the humanities and social sciences, global outreach, and top level international reputations, American universities could be said to be at the height of their power and prestige. But at just this moment, a series of crises have emerged around such things as free speech (attacks from both “right” and “left”); labor issues; the role and power of artificial intelligence; how the history of American universities is bound up with the slave trade; battles over Critical Race Theory and white privilege; questions of diversity equity and inclusion; calls to decolonise curriculum; stratospheric tuition rates resulting in debt-ridden students; and broadly speaking, the impact of the culture wars. While all these have some precedence, there is a new sense of concern and searching questions about the future. This talk explores the current situation and offers some preliminary thoughts about which aspects of American university practice might be useful models for other international systems.

Prof. Dr. Michael Beckerman je mezinárodně respektovaným muzikologem s výrazným zájmem o českou hudbu. Již od 70. let, kdy v Brně studoval teoretické spisy Leoše Janáčka, je v úzkém kontaktu s českou muzikologií a do odborné diskuse vždy přinášel důležitý pohled zvenčí. Působí jako profesor na New York University, kde do loňského roku zastával funkci vedoucího hudební katedry. Vedle pedagogické a badatelské činnosti se věnuje i popularizaci hudení kultury, je autorem nejen odborných publikací, ale také podnětných hudební analýz, popularizačních článků a četných televizních a rozhlasových pořadů. V letech 2010 až 2012 byl Prof. Beckerman viceprezidentem Americké muzikologické společnosti. Za svou odbornou i společensky významnou činnost získal řadu ocenění, např. cenu Gratias Agit od Ministerstva zahraničí ČR nebo čestné doktoráty na Univerzitě Palackého v Olomouci a Masarykově Univerzitě v Brně.
