Filling in the Gap: The Post Pentecost Series of Gospel Antiphons, a new monograph by David Eben

Karolinum Press has just released a monograph by David Eben, written in collaboration with Štefánia Demská and Jan Bilwachs: Filling in the Gap: The Post Pentecost Series of Gospel Antiphons

From a liturgical point of view, the period of the church year between Pentecost and the beginning of Advent is quite unusual. It seems that the arrangement of Gospel antiphons for this period caused certain problems from the very beginning. The first mention of this in the sources is by the 9th-century Frankish liturgist Amalar in his treatise Liber de ordine antiphonarii.

Amalar’s testimony forms the basis of this publication. The study „Filling in the Gap“ provides insight into the world of Carolingian monks and clerics who created the fascinating liturgical organism known as the Liturgy of the Hours or officium. The work focuses on the creative process behind the creation of the choral officium repertoire for a given period of the liturgical year. This is a period with an exceptionally diverse repertoire that has not yet been given systematic attention. The study combines historical and liturgical evidence with musical analysis, opening up new possibilities for grouping manuscripts and interpreting their interrelationships. The catalogue of melodies contained in this book includes transcriptions of the post-Pentecost antiphon repertoire from 24 manuscripts from across Western Europe.
